What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Doctors have recently been learning more about the body's ability to heal itself. Integrative medicine, such as platelet-rich plasma therapy, can harness these abilities and amplify the body's natural growth factors to heal tissue. Platelet-Rich Plasma consists of two elements- plasma and platelets. Plasma is the liquid portion of your blood, which allows red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets to circulate the body. Platelets are a type of blood cell that makes your blood clot and plays a role in healing. Platelet-Rich Plasma is blood that contains more platelets than usual and plays a key part in the body's natural healing process.

To create this, we take a sample of your blood, and use a device called a centrifuge to separate the platelet rich plasma from the rest of your blood.

After creating the Platelet-Rich Plasma, the solution is then injected directly into the area that is being treated. In some cases, an ultrasound will be used to guide the injection. The injection will increase the concentration of growth factors that help cells repair and renew, which accelerates the healing process of the targeted area.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma used for?

Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy is used for a wide variety of circumstances such as tendon injuries, muscle injuries, joint injuries, post-surgery healing, arthritis-related pain, hair loss, and skin rejuvenation. It can heal rotator cuff tears, tendon ruptures, tennis elbow, and more. One of the key advantages of PRP is that it can reduce the need for anti-inflammatories or stronger medications like opioids. Furthermore, there are very limited side effects because the injection is created from your own blood, so your body will not reject it or have a negative reaction.
